The continuous fine diamond pattern spread across this carpet is a traditional Persian carpet design called "Mahi." Mahi means "fish" in Persian, and the name comes from the way small schools of fish are stylized to swim within the diamond shapes. Originating in the Tabriz region of Iran, this pattern was originally used in court carpets as a symbol of water and fertility, and is considered one of the most intricate and prestigious designs in the history of Persian carpets.
This piece is a hand-woven reproduction of the Mahi design by Pakistani artisans. It features a multi-tiered medallion with continuous petals in the center, and a deep crimson (red) background with intricate geometric patterns, resulting in a stunning finish.
Strength of the Turkish Knot (Ghiordes Knot)
The greatest feature of this carpet is that it is woven with a **Turkish knot (Ghiordes knot)**. Compared to the Persian knot (Senneh knot), the Turkish knot has stronger thread fastening power, making the pile (loop) less likely to come loose. Therefore, it is less prone to losing its shape even in living rooms or hallways with high traffic, and maintains its beautiful condition for a long time, resulting in a highly durable carpet.
