This is a unique Persian Loribaft Gabbeh, as if a small story is depicted within a single rug.
The size is 123×44cm. It's a long, narrow runner type, with people leading camels, animals, three trees woven into the center, and a sun-like motif woven at the top. Within the simple composition, motifs reminiscent of nomadic life and nature are arranged, giving it a different warmth from typical Persian rugs.
What's particularly interesting are the camels and human figures depicted in the center. These motifs suggest travel, migration, and nomadic life, allowing for the free expression characteristic of Gabbeh rugs. Unlike urban Persian rugs where designs are precisely copied, the sensibilities of the weaver are often more evident in these tribal rugs, and even similar designs have a different character in each piece.
What is a Loribaft Gabbeh?
Gabbeh are hand-woven rugs traditionally made by the Lori and Qashqai tribes living around the Zagros Mountains in southwestern Iran. Originally, they were not made for sale but used as floor coverings and bedding in nomadic life. The rustic designs, boldly depicting animals, trees, and people, which are characteristic of Gabbeh rugs known today, originated from this way of life.
**Loribaft** is known as a type of Gabbeh that retains its rustic feel while being finished with a finer, denser weave. This makes it easier to express intricate patterns than with regular Gabbeh, and the surface also has a smoother finish.
