This is a Mashwani Kilim from Herat, Afghanistan, handwoven by the Mashwani tribe. Their specialty, the Sumak weaving technique, is a highly difficult weaving method that requires complex skills, making it rare and not commonly found in Japan.
It is a rug with an uneven surface, combining a pileless, hemp-like kilim with a piled rug section. Its geometric design is beautiful, and it feels very comfortable underfoot.
The regularly linked diamond shapes create an enchanting design.
It can, of course, be used as a rug, but its lightness also allows it to be hung on a wall as decoration. It can be folded compactly and is easy to carry, making it recommended for camping and picnics.
