Qum: The Pinnacle of Persian Carpets
The city of Qum in central Iran is known as a holy city for Shi'a Muslims, but in the world of Persian carpets, it has earned a reputation as the premier region for silk carpets. While carpet production in Qum only truly began in the early 20th century, making it a relatively new region in the history of Persian carpets, it quickly established itself as a producer of the highest quality in that short period. The reason is clear: Qum workshops have specialized in using the finest silk threads and in the technical skill of meticulously weaving intricate patterns with extremely high density (knot count).
Silk carpets possess a unique luster and delicate coloring that wool carpets do not. Their appearance changes depending on the viewing angle, and the patterns seem to glow as they catch the light – this is the beauty unique to silk carpets.
Shirazi Workshop: A Guarantee of Quality
This piece was woven by the Shirazi workshop, renowned as one of the most prestigious workshops in Qum. The workshop's signature is woven into the top of the carpet, serving as a guarantee of "where and by whom this carpet was made" – essentially, the workshop's sign. Carpets bearing the signature of a famous workshop are proof that they meet certain standards in both design and quality control, and they also hold value as collector's items.
Design Highlights
This piece features the central medallion composition, considered the most formal in Persian carpets.
- Central Rosette Medallion: A kaleidoscopic circular design, primarily orange, intricately combining geometric patterns and small floral motifs.
- Ivory Ground: Adorned with flourishing arabesque patterns (Islamic scrolls) of intertwined branches and leaves.
- Corner Motifs: Arch-shaped decorative patterns that echo the central medallion.
- Vase Motifs: Designs of vases holding flowers are placed throughout, creating a composition reminiscent of a "garden of paradise."
- Multi-Layered Border: A classic border primarily in deep bordeaux (reddish-brown), with arabesque patterns and rosettes alternating.
