Kilims are handwoven by the Maimana people, an ethnic minority living in the mountains. Kilims are flat-woven carpets with low pile that are mainly produced in Turkey, Iran, and Afghanistan. They are treasured in the area, being washed when dirty, repaired when torn, or repurposed into bags.
Although the material is wool, it has a smooth, linen-like feel. It is breathable and thin, so it's cool even in the summer. It is dyed using natural dyes made from plants and spices, so it is safer than chemical dyes and is safe for children and pets.
It is also durable and can be cared for at home, making it highly practical and allowing you to use it without hesitation in your entryway or kitchen.
The same pattern can be printed on both sides, so it can be used not only as a rug, but also as a piece of furniture or as a partition. Its light weight means it can also be hung on the wall. It can be folded up small and is easy to carry, making it ideal for camping and picnics.
This kilim has some worn areas in the wool, typical of vintage items. Please see image 12 for reference. It has been cleaned and is in perfect condition.
