Qom is a religious city located approximately 100km south of Tehran, known as a holy site for Iranian Shiites. In fact, carpet weaving in this region only began in the 20th century, making its history much more recent compared to traditional weaving centers like Tabriz and Isfahan. In the 1920s and 1930s, the skills brought by weavers who moved from Kashan quickly established Qom as a premier producer of high-quality Persian carpets in a surprisingly short period. Its intricate knotting and elaborate pictorial designs, which utilize the luster unique to silk, are still highly valued by collectors worldwide.
This particular piece is a "100% silk" masterpiece, with silk used for the warp, weft, and pile, even among Qom-made carpets. The black ground with rising yellow vertical stripes leads to a floral-patterned frame reminiscent of Persian architectural domes (arches), inside which circular rosette medallions are layered. Turquoise and ivory flowers stand out beautifully against the black ground, and a major appeal is the glossy light unique to silk that emanates depending on the viewing angle. The meticulously woven border is inscribed with the name of the workshop, "Hamid Workshop," in Persian script, serving as proof of skilled craftsmanship.
With a compact size of 92×59cm, it can be enjoyed not only as a floor covering but also as a work of art displayed on a wall. Many appreciate silk carpets by hanging them and observing how the light catches them from different angles, making them a special accent in living rooms or studies.
