Woven around the 1970s

This is a 100×65cm hand-woven Persian rug crafted in Mashhad, in northeastern Iran. Unlike typical Persian rugs that feature floral patterns or central medallions, this piece is a **pictorial rug depicting the tale of "Layla and Majnun."**

In the center, two figures are depicted, surrounded by intricately rendered scenes of flowering trees, birds, and waterscapes. From the characters' clothing and expressions to the individual plants, every detail is captured through the weave, offering the pleasure of viewing a narrative painting in the form of a rug.

The story of Layla and Majnun originated as an Arab love legend, later immortalized as a grand epic poem by the 12th-century Persian poet Nizami, becoming one of the defining love stories of Persian literature. Since then, it has been retold in various forms throughout Persia, the Middle East, and Central Asia.

About Mashhad Rugs

Mashhad, located in the Khorasan region of northeastern Iran, is a city with a long history of rug production. The tradition of rug making there has been documented since the Safavid era, and with the modernization of the city's workshops, large-scale production flourished. It has been recognized as one of the most important centers for Persian rug production from the 19th through the 20th century.

While Mashhad rugs are best known for their floral and medallion designs featuring deep reds and navies, pictorial works depicting people and stories are another significant form of expression in Persian rug weaving. Persian rugs have a long history of being influenced by other art forms, such as literature and painting. During the Safavid period in particular, design elements such as human figures and medallions were incorporated into rugs from court arts and manuscript illuminations.

This piece combines the hand-weaving techniques of Mashhad with a story deeply rooted in Persian culture. You can enjoy it as a unique pictorial rug that showcases the tale of Layla and Majnun, along with figures, flowers, birds, and natural landscapes, all captured in fine detail.
