This kilim was woven by the Maimana people, an ethnic minority living in the mountainous region of central Afghanistan. A kilim is a flat-woven, pileless rug primarily produced in Turkey, Iran, and Afghanistan. Locally, they are cherished and used carefully; they are washed when dirty, repaired when torn, or repurposed into bags.
Although the material is wool, it has a smooth texture similar to linen. It is highly breathable and thin, making it cool even in summer. Since it is dyed using natural dyes made from plants and spices, it is safer than chemical dyes and can be used with peace of mind by children and pets.
Since the same pattern appears on both sides, it can be used not only as a rug but also draped over furniture or used as a partition, offering various applications. It is lightweight, so it can also be hung on a wall for decoration. It can be folded compactly and is easy to carry, making it recommended for camping and picnic scenes.
