Afghan Ghazni Hand-Woven Rug

The Ghazni region in central Afghanistan has long been known as a producer of high-quality wool. The wool of sheep raised in the high-altitude, dry climate is characterized by thick, elastic fibers that possess both luster and durability, making it a prized material for rug weaving. This rug is also hand-woven, with hand-spun yarn made from Ghazni wool, and each knot tied by skilled artisans. Unlike machine-spun yarn, hand-spun yarn has slight variations in thickness, which creates natural variations in color depth called "abrash" on the woven surface, adding to its character with age.

Instead of chemical dyes, natural dyes derived from plants such as madder and indigo are used for coloring. The gentle colors born from the blessings of the land do not dull with age; instead, they soften and blend beautifully over time.

The design features two large octagonal medallions arranged vertically on an ivory background. Small floral motifs are layered concentrically at the center of the medallions, surrounded by geometric patterns depicted in orange and indigo. The borders on both sides feature a continuous pattern of small, butterfly-like floral motifs, giving the overall impression of vibrancy and cohesion.
